The Rt Rev John William Hawkins Flagg was an eminent Anglican Missionary Bishop from 1969 to 1977[1]; and was later General Secretary of the South American Missionary Society. Born in Somerset[2] on 16 June 1929 and ordained in 1959 [3] he began his career with the post of Chaplain at the St Andrew's Mission, Asunción [4] after which he was Archdeacon of Paraguay before elevation to the Episcopate as the inaugural Bishop of that country. Translated to Peru in 1973 he returned to Britain in 1978 as Vicar of St Cyprian's, Edge Hill[5] before another spell in South America. He died on 1 October 2008. He left behind 6 children and many grandchildren.
